Homemade Play Dough!

Lexi is back with another fun recipe to keep kiddos busy indoors!

During these times it’s a challenge to find engaging activities with kids when we are stuck at home majority of the time. One of my favorite activities to pass time when we are in the house for long periods of time is making play dough. It’s super easy and quick. The children like it because they are included and get to see the fruits of their labor at the end. They also get very excited about picking their colors. One of the best parts about making your own play dough at home is that it’s non toxic and all of the ingredients can be found at your local grocery store. No special items to order!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup salt

  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar

  • 2 cups lukewarm water

  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)

  • Food coloring, optional (We love this plant-based option)

  • Quart sized bags

Instructions:

Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large pot. Next add the water and oil. If you’re only making one color, add in the the color now as well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball. Remove from heat and then place inside a gallon sized bag or onto wax paper. Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth. If you’re adding colors after, divide the dough into balls (depending on how many colors you want) and then add the dough into the quart sized bags. Start with about 5 drops of color and add more to brighten it. Knead the dough, while inside the bag so it doesn’t stain your hands. Once it’s all mixed together you’re ready to PLAY. Store in an airtight container.

Extras:

We found a few fun tools to help with creative play!

-Practice letters with this fun set

-We love this wooden set for creating textures

-Had to add some fun fall shapes!
